At reduced pressures, the boiling points of liquids are lowered and most of the oxygen is removed. Distilling under vacuum allows very high boiling materials to be distilled at lower temperatures. Reducing the distillation temperature prevents thermal damage to the sample and the absence of oxygen helps preserve materials that are sensitive to its presence.
B/R VAC-1000 Vacuum Regulation SystemThe B/R VAC-1000 is a unique vacuum regulation system that features a digital vacuum controller, 5 decade pressure transducer, automatic vacuum control and all the necessary cabling. Also included in the VAC-1000 are a vacuum manifold/cold trap and 2 stage mechanical vacuum pump, mounted on a portable cart for easy maneuverability in the laboratory.
The operator sets the digital controller to a set point, i.e. 1mmHg. The pressure transducer senses the pressure in the distillation system and adjusts the automatic proportional control valve accordingly. The control valve can be attached to a gaseous nitrogen source, or be open to the atmosphere, depending on the sample requirement.
The B/R VAC-1000 is designed to be used with B/R's complete line of distillation equipment. However, simply by disconnecting a single vacuum hose and the power cord, the vacuum system can be quickly and easily rolled to another site and used for other laboratory applications.
Atmospheric Equivalent Temperature (AET)
When distilling at reduced pressures it is helpful to know what the equivalent vapor temperature at atmospheric pressure would be. The calculation is complex. As a courtesy, B/R Instrument offers a program to calculate the Atmospheric Equivalent Temperature, free of charge.
